FIRST WAR OF INDEPENDENCE(1857)

Bakht Khan(Bijnor, Rohilkhand, North-western Region of Uttar Pradesh)- Became Subedar under EICo and took part in the 1857 rebellion. 

Begum Hazrat Mahal(Queen of Awadh, Lucknow region)- She revolted against EICo(in 1857) with the support of Raja Jailal Singh

Raja Jailal Singh(Azamgarh) 

Mangal Pandey(Nagwa, Ballia)- He was sepoy in the 34th Regiment of Bengal Native infantry of British East India Company. He started the 1857 revolt 

Maulvi Liaquat Ali(Allahabad)- religious leader from Allahabad region. 

Rani Lakshmibai(Jhansi)- Rani/Queen of Jhansi

Jhalkari Bai(Jhansi)- leader of women regiment of Rani Laxmi Bai

Rao Kadam Singh(Meerut)- Leader of Gurjar

Freedom Fighters from UP(20th century)

Hasrat Mohani(1903, Unnao)- The famous slogan Inquilab Zindabad(in 1921) was given by him. He was the first man who demanded complete independence for India in 1921 at the Ahmedabad Session of the Indian National Congress.

Purushottam Das Tandon/UP Gandhi(1905, Allahabad)- Because of his efforts, Hindi was accorded the status of Official Language of India. He was customarily given the title Rajarishi (Raja + Rishi).

Raja Mahendra Pratap(1906, Hathras)- He was journalist, writer, and Marxist revolutionary social reformist of India and President of first Provisional Government of India(1915-1919, Kabul). He was born to the princely Jat family of state of Mursan in the Hathras District of Uttar Pradesh.

Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi(1915, Kanpur)- A journalist and well-known face of Non-cooperation Movement.

Govind Ballabh Pant(1915, Almora- now in Uttarakhand)- A lawyer who initially represented Ramprasad Bismil, Ashfaq Ulla Khan and other revolutionaries involved in the Kakori case in the mid-1920s. He was the Chief Minister of the United Provinces from 1937 to 1939. After independence, he served as Union Home Minister from 1955–1961.


Acharya Narendra Dev(1915, Sitapur)- He was one of the leader of the Congress Socialist Party in India. His democratic socialism renounced violent means as a matter of principle and embraced the Satyagraha as a revolutionary tactic. He advocated the abolition of poverty and exploitation not just through the Marxist materialist dialectic but especially on moral and humanistic grounds.

Asaf Ali(1915, Bijnor)- He was the first ambassador from India to the US. 

Ashfaq Ullah Khan(1915, Shahjahanpur)- He along with other revolutionary leaders looted the train carrying British government money in Kakori(near Lucknow). 

Maulana Mohammad Ali(1915, Rampur)- He is popularly known as Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar. He was elected to become the President of Indian National Congress party in 1923 and ; also one of the founders and presidents of the All-India Muslim League.

Maulana Shaukat Ali(1915, Rampur)- Muslim leader of the Khilafat Movement that erupted in response to the fall of the Ottoman Empire. He served as member of the 'Central Assembly' in British India from 1934 to 1938.

Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari(1915, Ghazipur)- former president of the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League during the Indian Independence Movement. He was one of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia University and remained its chancellor 1928 to 1936. 

Ram Prasad Bismil(1918, Shahjahanpur)- He was an Indian revolutionary who participated in the Mainpuri conspiracy of 1918, and the Kakori conspiracy of 1925. He was also a well-known patriotic poet and wrote in Hindi and Urdu using the pen names Ram, Agyat and Bismil. He was the founder of Matrivedi(Revolutionary organization) and HRA. He was hanged on 19 December 1927 at Gorakhpur. 

Genda Lal Dixit(1918, Etawa)- along with ram prasad Bismil, he participated in the Mainpuri conspiracy of 1918. He was the founder of revolutionary organization Shivaji Samiti. 

Mahavir Tyagi(Moradabad, 1919)- He leads the Kisan (peasant) movement under the banner of Indian National Congress.

Chandra Shekhar Azad(1920, Unnao)- Chandra Shekhar Tiwari reorganized HRA(Hindustan Republican Association) to HSRA(Hindustan Socialist Republican Army). 

Rafi Ahmed Kidwai(1920, Barabanki)- He was India's first Minister for Communications of Independent India.

Rajendra Lahiri(1920s, from Bengal but studied at BHU Varanasi)- He was associated with the Hindustan Republican Association aimed at ousting the British from India. He also took part in the Dakshineswar bombing incident and absconded.

1918(Mainpuri conspiracy)- members of Matrivedi(Ram prasad Bismil) + Shivaji Samiti(Genda Lal Dixit) robbed govt treasury at mainpuri. 
4 February 1922- chauri chaura incident at gorakhpur
12 February 1922- Gandhi halted the non cooperation movement(youth were not happy with Gandhiji decision) 
1923, Allahabad(Yellow Paper constitution)- draft was prepared by Ram Prasad Bismil + Sachindranath Sanyal
3 October 1924(Kanpur meeting)- under the leadership of Sachindra nath sanyal, yellow paper was adopted and HRA was established. 
Hindustan Republican Association (HRA, 1924-1936)- founded by Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Sachindra Nath Bakshi, Sachindranath Sanyal and Jogesh Chandra Chatterjee.
8 Aug 1925(Kakori conspiracy)- Bismil, Khan, Rajendra Lahiri, Chandrashekhar Azad, Sachindra Bakshi, Keshab Chakravarty, Manmathnath Gupta, Mukundi Lal, Murari Lal Gupta and Banwari Lal.
December 1927- Ashfaqullah Khan, Ram Prasad Bismil, Roshan Singh and Rajendra Lahiri – were hanged in the Kakori conspiracy. 
1928(Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi)- HRA → HSRA(Hindustan Socialist Republican Association)
HSRA's manifesto titled Philosophy of the Bomb was written by Bhagwati Charan Vohra(Punjab) 



Swami Sahajanand Saraswati(1929, Ghazipur)- He was from Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh. He was a Social reformer, historian, philosopher, writer, ascetic, revolutionary, Marxist, politician who worked for the betterment of India. His social and political activities focused mostly on Bihar in the initial days, and gradually spread to the rest of India with the formation of the All-India Kisan Sabha.


Ram Manohar Lohia(1936, Akbarpur)- He was a founding member of Congress Socialist Party. He was also editor of Congress Socialist and worked with the Congress which was broadcast secretly from various places in Bombay until 1942.

Chittu Pandey(Balia, 1942- Quit India Movement)- Tiger of Ballia by Jawaharlal Nehru + Subhas Chandra Bose for leadership during quit India movement

Women Personality in Pre Independence Era

  Women Personality in Pre Independence Era Rani Velu Nachiyar(1730-1796)-  She was the first Indian queen(Sivaganga estate) to wage war with the East India Company in India. She regained her kingdom after defeating EICo. with the help of Hyder Ali and many mores. In Tamil she is regarded as Veeramangai .  She was a scholar of French, English, and Urdu languages. Savitribai Phule(1831-1897)-  She raised her voice against caste and gender discrimination. In 1848 she started school in Pune for girl education. She died while serving the Plague affected people.  Pandita Ramabai Sarasvati(1858-1922)-  1st woman to be awarded the titles of Pandita as a Sanskrit scholar and Sarasvati after being examined by the faculty of the University of Calcutta. In 1882, she presented the issue of women education to Hunter Commission . She founded Arya Mahila Samaj(Pune, 1882) . In the same year she wrote Stri Dharma Niti(Morals for Women) book and in 1883 she moved to Britain where she embraced Christia
