Women Personality in Pre Independence Era
Rani Velu Nachiyar(1730-1796)- She was the first Indian queen(Sivaganga estate) to wage war with the East India Company in India. She regained her kingdom after defeating EICo. with the help of Hyder Ali and many mores. In Tamil she is regarded as Veeramangai.
She was a scholar of French, English, and Urdu languages.
Savitribai Phule(1831-1897)- She raised her voice against caste and gender discrimination. In 1848 she started school in Pune for girl education. She died while serving the Plague affected people.
Pandita Ramabai Sarasvati(1858-1922)- 1st woman to be awarded the titles of Pandita as a Sanskrit scholar and Sarasvati after being examined by the faculty of the University of Calcutta.
In 1882, she presented the issue of women education to Hunter Commission. She founded Arya Mahila Samaj(Pune, 1882). In the same year she wrote Stri Dharma Niti(Morals for Women) book and in 1883 she moved to Britain where she embraced Christianity.
She founded Sharada Sadan(Pune, 1889) school for child widow with the help of M. G. Ranade and many more.
In 1890s she founded Mukti Mission to support child widow.
Ramabai Ranade(1862-1924)- She established a branch of Arya Mahila Samaj at bombay. In 1908 she founded Seva Sadan to help destitute women.
Bhikaiji Rustom Cama/Madam Cama(1861-1936)- She worked as a private secretary of Dadabhai Naoroji. In 1905, She founded Paris India Society. In France she started publication of Bande Mataram and later in 1909 she started publication of Talvar in response to the execution of Madan Lal Dhingra.
In 1907 at the International Socialist Conference in Stuttgart, Germany she hoisted tricolor flag (with Vandemataram written on it) as flag of Independence India.
Sarala Devi Chaudhurani(1872-1945)- Founded 1st national-level women's organization in India, Bharat Stree Mahamandal(Allahabad, 1910)
Her mother Swarnakumari Devi, a noted author, was the daughter of Debendranath Tagore.
Matangini Hazra(1870-1942)- She was shot dead in 1942 during quit India movement when she volunteer in Vidyut Bahini to capture Tamluk Thana(Bengal) during Quit India Movement. She was nicknemed by her followers as Gandhi buri.
Aruna Asaf Ali(1909-1996)- She hosted the Indian National flag at the Gowalia Tank maidan, Bombay during the Quit India Movement in 1942
Usha Mehta(1920-2000)- She organized the Congress Radio(Secret Congress Radio- underground radio station) which functioned for few months during the Quit India Movement of 1942.
